Sony goes Cloud-hopping with Final Fantasy VII edition PS3

Like some greedy vampire that just won’t rest, Final Fantasy VII keeps coming back again and again to suck the contents out of your wallets. Its latest incarnation is a re-release of Advent Children, and Sony’s getting in on the game with yet another special edition console to celebrate it. The upgraded movie is said to boast 30 more minutes of gratuitous high-res animation action while the new PS3 features a 160GB HDD and a matte “Cloud Black” paint job with Cloud’s Strike Strife Wolf emblem engraved (or at least appliqued) on top. The bundle with the movie (including a demo of Final Fantasy XIII) will sell for about $550 in Japan when it releases next month — naturally there was no mention of a US release.

Sony sells its 50 millionth PlayStation 2 in North America

Posted by admin | Posted in News | Posted on 15-01-2009

Joining the all-important 50 million club today is Sony, which has just recently moved its 50 millionth PlayStation 2 game console here in North America. For those with short-term memories, the PS2 hit the scene in the year 2000, well before the iPod, Windows XP and America’s current president took their rightful places. NPD numbers estimate that around 43 million of these 50 million units were sold here in the US of A, and if you’re really looking for some staggering numbers, get a load of this: In November 2008, 206,000 PS2s were moved in America, while just 172 million more PS3s were sold in the same window. Talk about longevity / sluggish adoption, respectively.

Sony brings two DVDirect Handycam-to-DVD writers to the US

Posted by admin | Posted in Stuff | Posted on 08-01-2009

While it’s certainly not the most invigorating release from Sony today, those stuck with too much video on their Handycams will be head over heels. The firm is expanding its DVDirect line by two, and while one of ‘em (the VRD-MC10) has been released in Japan previously, this marks the first time it’ll ship to American consumers. Said unit incorporates HDMI, component and composite inputs, and features the ability to transfer AVCHD-quality video to DVD; it also includes an i.LINK (FireWire 400) port as well as a USB socket for use with a wider range of devices. Moreover, the MC10 touts a 5-in-1 multicard reader for taking flash-based media straight to DVD, and the 2.7-inch LCD is just fine for previewing things beforehand. The DVDirect Express VRD-P1 DVD writer is tailor made to work quickly and easily with some of Sony’s newly announced camcorders, and the lack of advanced functionality means it’ll only run $150 (compared to the $300 stick on the MC10) when it ships in March.

Posted by admin | Posted in Music | Posted on 08-01-2009

Sony, the debatable kind of proprietary formats, has finally caved. Well, at least in this one instance, anyway. In a presumed confession that Apple’s music players actually are somewhat popular, it is releasing the iPod / iPhone-friendly CMT- LX20i micro shelf system, CMT- LX20i clock radio and MHC-EC99i mini boombox (pictured above). Not a whole lot left to say other than they also play CDs, tell time and rattle windows, respectively. For pricing and release details — including a word or two on the new Muteki systems

sony-walkman-nwx-x1000

As expected, Sony unveiled its rumored iPod Touch competitor and all we can say is wow! The Sony Walkman NWZ-X1000 will feature a colorful and crisp 3-inch OLED display, Wi-Fi and built-in headphone-independent noise cancellation for those who prefer not to shell out a Benjamin for a pair of noise-canceling headphones. We also can’t overlook that marble painted exterior as it is most definitely unique. The new touchscreen NWZ-X1000 will be available in 16GB and 32GB sizes. Further specifics on the player, pricing and availability will have to wait until Sony’s press conference later this evening. Until then, start drooling and pinching those pennies as Sony may actually have a viable iPod competitor on its hands.
