Samsung announces reorg, splits into two divisions

Posted by admin | Posted in News | Posted on 16-01-2009

Keeping the good times rolling today, Samsung has announced that it will undergo a massive reorginization in an effort to stay afloat during the economic downturn. Among the info it smacked shareholders with this morning, the company will split into two separate divisions: a Digital Media and Communications division that will focus on mobile phones, televisions and other consumer electronics, and a Device Solution division that will handle the component, semiconductor and LCD businesses. Current Samsung Electronics CEO Lee Yoon-woo will retain his title and will head the Device Solution division while Choi Gee-sung, current president of Samsung’s cellphone unit, will head up the Digital Media and Communications division. There will also be another healthy round of musical chairs involving a variety of key roles throughout the company. Samsung is scheduled to announce its Q4 2008 earning on January 23rd and this massive announcement exactly one week prior to the earnings call doesn’t bode well to say the least. Samsung posted a 44 percent drop off in Q3 2008, compared to the same quarter one year prior.

Samsung’s LED-backlit P2370L LCD monitor looks good for $399

Posted by admin | Posted in Computers | Posted on 14-01-2009

Comically enough, Samsung didn’t even bother telling us the panel size of its P2370L, but we’ll go out on a limb and assume it’s 23-inches diagonally based on the cryptic model name. The latest member of Sammy’s Touch of Color family sports a LED backlight, a depth of just 0.65-inches, 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, two-millisecond response time, DVI input, 1080p native resolution, a swivel stand and “Starlight” touch controls. If in fact we’re looking at a 23-inch LED-backlit LCD for just $399, we’d say it’s quite the bargain — particularly when compared to Apple’s 24-incher (which runs $899). Guess we’ll find out when it ships later this quarter.

50-inch multitouch TV on display from Samsung

Posted by admin | Posted in News | Posted on 11-01-2009

If there’s one thing for sure here at CES it’s that we’ve seen a bunch of multitouch devices, both good and bad. Add this 50-inch multitouch display from Samsung to the list titled “cool as hell.” Once we were done snapping shots of the P3, we saw people surrounding this bad boy so we decided to see what was up. We don’t have much info but one thing’s for sure: these devices are much more fun when you’re just playing around rather than using it for some more meaningful purpose.

Samsung HMX-R10 HD camcorder is stunning, stunningly small

Posted by admin | Posted in Stuff | Posted on 08-01-2009

We’ve been a fan of Samsung’s roundish camcorders ever since we reviewed the SC-HMX20C, and the HMX-R10 somehow manages to improve upon even that. The CMOS-based Full HD camcorder sports a 2.7-inch LCD monitor, a lens that’s angled up at 25-degrees (you know, for those spy shots) and a 5x optical zoom. Details beyond that are scant, but you can take a closer look in the read link below.

Samsung’s P3 has been official in other parts of the globe for awhile now, but the outfit has decided to wait until CES to make it so here in the States. As anticipated, the PMP arrives with its “evolutionary” EmoTure user interface, 4/8/16/32GB of internal storage, haptic feedback, a 3-inch WQVGA display, DNSe 3.0 sound enhancement technology and a Music Hot Touch Key that enables users to instantly access favorite music features / selections without having to wade through multiple menus. The device itself is just 0.39-inches thick, and it also boasts a voice recorder, FM radio and Bluetooth support. Check it sometime during the first half of this year in matte black / matte silver motifs.

Samsung debuts H-Series of HD camcorders, first with 64GB SSD

Posted by admin | Posted in Stuff | Posted on 06-01-2009

You should’ve known that Canon wouldn’t be able to introduce a new family of HD camcorders without Samsung hitting back with a crew of its own, so it’s with that in mind that we present Samsung’s H-Series. The HMX-H106, HMX-H105, HMX-H104, and HMX-H100 all arrive with Full HD sensors and a Schneider Kreuznach Varioplan HD lens with Optical Image Stabilization, but it’s the H106 that really steals the show. Said device is the first Full HD camcorder to incorporate a 64GB SSD within, while the H105 and H104 offer up 32GB and 16GB SSDs, respectively; as for the H100, you’ll be providing your own SD / SDHC card before anything gets recorded. The whole crew utilizes H.264 compression, meaning that the big daddy can hold 12 hours of footage at Full HD resolution

Available in April, no pricing was mentioned yet, but last year’s model sells for around $850. Take a peek at this beauty in the gallery below, then click Continue for details in Samsung’s press release.

Samsung Pixon coming to the US with AT&T-compatible 3G

Posted by admin | Posted in Mobile Phones | Posted on 15-12-2008

Well it’s no Innov8 but we’re still pretty amazed that Samsung is actually going to be bringing its 8 megapixel to the US with some 3G love. No, seriously! The FCC just did its thing, and by that we mean it let us all know about a handset way ahead of schedule - the Samsung M8800L. The L variant is basically identical to its European counterpart but it sports the coveted 850 and 1900 MHz WCDMA bands that we hope for with each new high-end handset announcement and typically don’t see. In other words, it looks like AT&T will soon be getting it’s 8 megapixels on and we can all look forward to some tempting subsidized pricing. Initial rumors pointed to T-Mobile as being a potential carrier for this beast of a camera phone but unless a third version is in the works, it’s unfortunately not looking overly likely.
