Mysterious pink iPhone 3G hits eBay, cue onslaught of rumors

Posted by admin | Posted in Apple IPhone | Posted on 02-01-2009

Say wha’?! An iPhone in a hue other than black, white, or silver? While a red model has been rumored since before the 3G even launched, we’ve never thought about a pink one — let alone one hitting eBay. The text on the back of the device convinces us that this isn’t a simple ColorWare job, but there aren’t any photos of the back of the packaging either. Our take? Some OEM in Asia whipping up custom colors. But hey, Macworld’s just under a week away, so who knows?

32GB iPhone coming at Macworld?

Posted by admin | Posted in Apple IPhone | Posted on 28-12-2008

iphone-3g.jpg Rumors have been flying around since quite some time for the 32GB iPhone. AT&T adds fuel to the speculation by offering the 8GB refurbished iPhones for $99. Macblogz has received an anonymous tip which points the the release of the 32 Gig iPhone - “That rumored red iPhone… It’s not happening. The only iPhone news I know for certain is that it’s getting bumped to 32GB in January,”In order to sell a less-expensive iPhone, priced (let’s say) at $99, Apple would need to introduce a new model with less storage. The current models would get bumped in specs, and a cheaper iPhone would be introduced and outfitted with less storage than its bigger brothers. The current 8GB iPhone would have absolutely no place in this line up, and will probably be discontinued. At the same time, for Apple to increase or double the iPhone’s storage, they would need to either raise the price, or increase the iPod touch’s storage capacity as well, in order to avoid significant cannibalization, or confusion among consumers.

iPhone could soon support Windows apps

Posted by admin | Posted in News | Posted on 25-12-2008

iphone_vista.jpg If you are still waiting for the iPhone to support flash players, support cut and paste officially and other applications, your wishes could soon be answered by a company called Citrix. The company is actively developing a Citrix Receiver for the iPhone that will bring the world of millions of Windows apps and developers to the iPhone. Users of both PCs and Macs will be able to access the same desktop session on their iPhones as they would on their desktop computers, and move seamlessly between the two. The product is a software client that would be installed on both a user’s computer and mobile phone, and work in conjunction either with Citrix’s desktop virtualization software or with its XenApp Windows application delivery system.

PhD student increases iPhone battery life by 12x

Posted by admin | Posted in Apple IPhone, News | Posted on 25-12-2008

antenna-iphone.jpg Atif Shamin a PhD student at Carleton University in Canada invented a ‘transmitter system on-package’ that significantly extends the battery life of mobile devices. He targeted the connection between the circuit board and the antenna. Instead of wire, he designed a high frequency micro-transmitter and receiver, avoiding the usual loss of power pumping bits through a wire. He has reached a breakthrough in the energy efficiency of mobile devices. He created a module that replaces all of the wires connecting a phone’s electrical circuits and the antennae, making them communicate wirelessly. This makes the device’s efficiency 12 times over, drastically improving battery life.

Simple Steps to Re-enable DFU Mode in Mac OS X 10.5.6 to Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone

Posted by admin | Posted in Apple IPhone | Posted on 19-12-2008

DFU mode is needed if your iPhone is never pwnaged (used PwnageTool or Quickpwn) before whenever you want to jailbreak and or unlock it. For those already having pwnaged their iPhone further action only needs simple recovery mode.

Mac OS X 10.5.6 was released on December 15th, 2008. It disables recognition of a device (like the iPhone) in DFU mode. It is not known if this is intentionally disabled by Apple or just a bug. The iPhone Dev Team believes “this behavior is due to a kernel bug not a specific countermeasure by Apple.”

One solution ist to replace two plugin kexts with the ones from Mac OS X 10.5.5 and then rebuild the kextcache. This innvolves some knowledge of the system and heavy use of the application Terminal.

This is where the Automator programm Fix_DFU_10_5_6 comes into action. I put it together to do the complete job with one mouse click. The user has to be logged into his Mac with administrator privileges (usually the account you used while setting up your Mac) and has to provide the admin’s password.

The programm then:
1. checks if you are at Mac OS X 10.5.6 or better (if not will quit)
2. show a readme
3. quits all running apps (with save option)
4. backup the original files (AppleUSBHub.kext and IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext from 10.5.6) in a new folder on your Desktop
5. ask for your admin password
6. copy AppleUSBHub.kext and IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext from 10.5.5 into the desired location on your Mac
7. set owner:group and permissions
8. rebuild the kextcache
9. reboot your Mac

Right at the end the programm will tell you that the cache is beeing rebuild, just let it do its job.
Your Mac will automatically reboot when done - DFU is enabled then.

How-to (see pic below)

Download the package (zip-archive) at
Rapidshare
or
Mediafire

Unzip the archive (pic 1) and place the folder “Install_IOUSBFamily_kext_10_5_5″ on your Desktop (important). Open the folder and start the Programm “Fix_DFU_10_5_6″ (pic 2).

You will see the Readme box (click “OK”) (pic 3), then you have to provide your admin password (pic 4). The programm then will do its job.
At the end the Finder will open another dialog box telling you that the cache is beeig rebuild (pic 5). Klick “OK” or just leave the box alone. After a couple seconds your Mac will reboot automatically - done, DFU is enabled again.

On the Desktop you will find a new folder called “Backup_IOUSBFamily_kext_10_5_6″, it contains the two 10.5.6 files

Hope this helps,
v.

p.s.: If you are interested in the Automator source, just drop me a pm with your e-mail address
