Lowrance Trio of GeoCaching Treasures

I am a Geocacher. If you have not given the sport a try, then you should get out right now and check it out. I promise there is a Geocache in your area. The hobby is fun, healthy, and with the exception of a GPS device, it is free. Speaking of GPS devices, Lowrance has just released a trio of new GPS receivers, and they are both beautiful and functional.

I have used a Garmin for years for Geocaching, and recently, I have been using an iPhone. My Garmin is about to die, and I am afraid to do anything actually exciting with my iPhone 3G for fear that I will break the darn thing. The three new Lowrance GPS devices, the Lorance Outback, Lowrance Safari and Lowrance Sierra are very rugged and usable devices that can stand up to any punishment I can dish out. All three devices feature 2.7 inch touch displays that are full color, a microSD slot, and basemap set. The Safari adds to the mix a barometric altimeter, and the Sierra includes a 3D electronic compass and NAVTEQ street maps.

The three Lowrance GPS devices are due out this May (the perfect Geocache month) and will range from $229 to $550. The rugged factor and the color touch screen are definitely a temptation. I will check them out in may while I am out poking around for a Cache.

Ericsson and Intel developing remote kill switch with GPS locator for stolen laptops

Posted by admin | Posted in News | Posted on 11-12-2008

While a power-on password and encrypted drive in your laptop could protect your data in the event of theft, it doesn’t come close to the satisfaction you’d feel at being able to locate and prosecute the bastage who stole it. While Lenovo has its Lockdown PC Now feature that allows you to remotely disable your lost or stolen laptop via SMS, it lacks GPS to pinpoint your gear’s location. Enter Ericsson, who just announced its intent to make its HSPA-capable Mobile Broadband Modules compatible with Intel’s Anti-Theft Technology. Ericsson’s modules will support remote-SMS disable like Lenovo’s slabs but adds GPS to transmit the laptop’s location. At least they will once commercial products begin to ship sometime in the second half of 2009.

Holux GPS Tracker 005

Holux GPS Tracker 005

Holux has just rolled out its GPS Tracker 005 that surely looks handsome on your wrist, never mind the fact that it might not even be able to tell the current time. What the Holux GPS Tracker 005 offers, however, is real-time tracking that not only logs where you have been all day long, it even comes with its own SIM card that enables it to transmit the current location via SMS or other compatible channels. Satellite fix times are improved thanks to the ability to download ephemeris data from the server over the Internet, placing this virtually on par with A-GPS although the data on this will have to be downloaded manually weekly. The Holux GPS Tracker 005 is powered by a rechargeable Li-Ion battery, running for up to 60 hours tops before requiring a recharge. Nice to know this puppy is water resistant, as that surely is one less worry when you’re outdoors and the heavens open.
