Too cold, T-Mobile, too cold. The pink panther knows its BlackBerry-hungry customers are jonesing for some Curve 8900 and it just hit them where it hurts. That’s right T-Mobile customers, the Curve 8900 is now live on the site, calling to you from afar. Just to recap quickly: Availability for business customers comes on January 19th and everyone else will have to wait until February 11th. $199 looks to be the two-year contract price in both instances, with a full retail price set at $499.99. Orange mulls pulling the BlackBerry Bold (again)

Posted by admin | Posted in Mobile Phones, News | Posted on 03-01-2009

According to a report issued this morning, European carrier Orange is considering dropping the Bold from its lineup after being unable to solve “ongoing technical issues.” Orange employees familiar with the matter have said the Bold has the highest rate of return in its category, something which is not sitting well with the higher-ups due to a previous issue with the Bold. Back in October, Orange halted sales of the Bold due to a high incidence of dropped calls, crashes and poor overall performance. After a more stable OS release from RIM however, sales of the Bold resumed. If Orange were to pull the Bold for the second time it would most likely remain sidelined for the duration of its market life which would deal a huge blow to RIM. To compound matters, this move would give a great deal of additional publicity to the woes of RIM’s latest flagship products, the Bold and the Storm. For the time being Orange has declined to comment on the matter, as was the company’s position before the Bold was pulled last year.

At the time of the first recall, every Bold on the Orange network was running OS 4.6.0.126, a very buggy release indeed. Since Orange reinstated the Bold however, it moved to OS 4.6.0.162 - also not the the most usable version issued in recent history. In all fairness to RIM and Orange customers, perhaps Orange should hurry up and release a new OS build like 4.6.0.190 or beyond (though many are a severe step backwards) as several other carriers have done.

New RIM keypad patent; RIM looking for parts more breakable than its trackball?

Posted by admin | Posted in Mobile Phones, News | Posted on 27-12-2008

If you think the trackballs on RIM’s popular BlackBerry handsets are prone to breaking, just wait until the keypad described in one of RIM’s latest patents is realized - if it is ever realized. While a design of this nature would allow RIM to build a significantly more narrow handset, it would also seemingly be infinitely less usable and fragile. Three rows of the device’s keypad would be positioned on the face of the handset beneath the display. Standard 0-9 keys would be present an accessible at all times to allow standard usage. When used for messaging however, keys located on the devices side panels fold open to provide a full QWERTY or SureType keypad. Yes, trying to use a BlackBerry with a jumpy trackball can be pretty annoying but try using a BlackBerry after half the keys snap off…

BlackBerry Releases Media Sync for Mac Users

BlackBerry Releases Media Sync for Mac Users

My wife uses a BlackBerry, and she uses a Mac. In other words, Research In Motion hasn’t cared about her at all. She has been subjugated to using software like “The Missing Sync for Blackberry” - the name alone says it all. Well, RIM is finally showing Mac owning BlackBerry users a little love with the release of BlackBerry Media Sync for Mac.

Using BlackBerry Media Sync for Mac, MacBerry users can sync their iTunes libraries, including album art, videos and photos to their BlackBerry devices. Now, some would argue that it would be more useful for Mac owners to actually be able to sync their contacts and calendars, but hey - iTunes syncing is better then nothing.

I have tried it and it works pretty darn well. The experience is smooth and the software looks very “Macish.” While the official version is not out yet, Mac users can download a preview build of the software right now from RIM’s website.

BlackBerry Media Sync updated to support album art, Vista 64-bit

Posted by admin | Posted in Mobile Phones | Posted on 19-12-2008

Good news for everyone who uses their BlackBerry as an MP3 player — BlackBerry Media Sync has been updated by RIM and is now sitting all pretty at version 1.1.0.24. The most important new enhancement brought about by the upgrade is support for iTunes album artwork, something which made all previous versions before this seem like a pathetic sham of an iTunes-syncing application. Beyond that, users running a 64-bit version of Vista need no longer feel left out as their machines are now supported. Mac users on the other hand are still left in the dark, for now.

Sprint launches push-to-talk BlackBerry Curve 8350i

Posted by admin | Posted in Mobile Phones | Posted on 15-12-2008

Verizon may have been bangin’ on Sprint’s iDEN network, but that’s not stopping the yellow-faced carrier from introducing the “first ever” (wait, really?) push-to-talk BlackBerry on those very waves. Sprint is hailing the Curve 8350i as the “most advanced push-to-talk BlackBerry smartphone ever,” and given the options in the past, it’s hard to disagree. Thankfully, there’s also integrated WiFi / GPS as well as support for Group Connect, international direct connect and Talkgroup; you’ll also spot a 2-megapixel camera, multimedia player, speakerphone, video recorder, a microSDHC card slot, Bluetooth 2.0, a stereo headset jack and a removable 1,400mAh battery. It’s available now in a rather stocky 4.4- x 2.4- x 0.7-inch frame for as low as $149.99 (after all applicable rebates) on a two-year plan.
