iPhone App to Track Deadly Swine Flu Outbreak Coming Soon to the iPhone

Posted by admin | Posted in Apple IPhone | Posted on 05-05-2009

iPhone app - Swine Flu Tracker

A few days ago when World Health Organization (WHO) director general warned of a Swine flu pandemic by raising the alert to levels 5, folks at IntuApps don’t want iPhone users to be left out. They have submitted an iPhone app aptly called Swine Flu Tracker to track Swine flu to App Store for approval.

The rate at which Swine flu is spreading across the world is alarming so if you are a globe trotter and paranoid about the situation then you will definitely find this iPhone app useful.

The IGN has published the first screenshots of the upcoming game of Gameloft, Assassin’s Creed for the iPhone:

The Assassin’s Creed will be released in coming weeks, according to preliminary information based on Altair’s Chronicles (Nintendo DS).

assassins-creed-iphone-appstore

You must rely on a medieval form of parkour — think urban gymnastics with minaret flair — to clamber up walls, scurry along rooftops, and generally avoid detection from numerous guards, thugs, and vicious Templar knights. Altair’s acrobatics are controlled with on-screen virtual controls that look quite a bit like the successful set-up from Gameloft’s Hero of Sparta.

Yahoo Messenger for iPhone has most of the features available on the desktop version such as sending IM and SMS messages, support for emoticons, status updates, adding new contacts, and sharing photos.

light_writer_5.jpg LED vision peripherals have been in the market since quite some time. ‘Light Writer - POV Effect’ from Laan labs allows you do the same, i.e. write on thin air using the iPhone. You just type in your message or select a piece of clipart, wave your arm in the air (night works best). Available for $1 at the app store it is completely worth it.

Sound Curtain Noise Masking iPhone App Hands On

Posted by admin | Posted in Apple IPhone | Posted on 17-03-2009

Sound Curtain is a very, very simple noise masking app that works on the iPhone when you’re wearing a set of mic-enabled headphones. It performs much better than its $0.99 price would imply.

There’s three options: White noise, rainfall and harmonic tones. The white noise is decent if you’ve been using a white noise machine for a while, but the rainfall and harmonic tones can actually relax you in addition to its noise masking properties.

They’re no comparison to actual noise-canceling headphones, but for $0.99, they made the ridiculous construction mess outside less of a nuisance—probably even tolerable

Kindle for iPhone. Well played, Amazon

Posted by admin | Posted in Apple IPhone | Posted on 04-03-2009

My main criticism of the Kindle, Amazon’s eBook reading device, wasn’t that there was something wrong with the device, it was that in a world of smartphones, I couldn’t see many people paying $359 for a device that just reads books. And Amazon, which is first and foremost a book selling company, had to realize that the cost of the device, as good as it may be, would limit the sales potential for eBooks. Now I think it clearly does realize that, as it’s just launched Kindle for iPhone.

The application, available for free in the App Store, gives you access to all the eBooks you can find in the Kindle store. It’s not perfect — you need to buy the books on the web for example, and then they get transferred over to your Kindle app — but it’s a damn good idea.

Electronic book apps have been the fastest growing category recently in the App Store, according to a report by O’Reilly Radar. Applications like Stanza, an eBook reader, have proven popular on the iPhone so far, despite complaints by many that the screen is too small to read a book on. Now Amazon brings the Kindle store’s mother-lode of content to the device.

If you’re new to reading eBooks on the iPhone and worry about the small screen, you can get free samples of books to test the experience out. It’s certainly not as nice as the experience you get reading on the Kindle device, but for a lot of people, it sure beats paying $359 — and perhaps worse, having to lug around yet another piece of electronics.

The app has other benefits, such as syncing your current location in a book with Amazon’s servers. This feature (called Whispersync) is also available on the Kindle device, and it makes a lot of sense if you start reading a book on one, but want to continue on another. You can also adjust font size on the Kindle app, just as you can on the Kindle itself, and view notes that you took on the Kindle.

Since you buy the books through Amazon’s actual website, they are priced the same as they are on the Kindle — most running $9.99.

At the launch of the Kindle 2 last month, Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos hinted that the Kindle experience would come to other devices eventually. Speculation had been that the iPhone might see an app, but I don’t think anyone expected it this soon.
