Notebooks now make up over 70 percent of Mac sales

Posted by admin | Posted in Computers, News | Posted on 27-01-2009

Four years ago, sales of desktop machines made up 60 percent of Apple’s computer sales, while notebooks made up 40 percent. Not only have those numbers now reversed, they’ve skyrocketed in the direction of the notebook for Apple. In its most recently quarter, Apple reported that its notebooks constituted some 71 percent of all Mac sales, while desktops made up just 29 percent, The Industry Standard notes today.

To be fair, sales of Apple’s notebook were likely boosted more than usual thanks to the new “unibody” MacBook and MacBook Pros, while its most popular desktop computer, the iMac, failed to get an update for the quarter. Still, it’s impossible to deny the trend that notebook sales are taking over the company’s computer business.

This news comes at a time when a lot of people are calling for Apple to release a netbook, a small, cheap variety of laptop that’s seeing a high level of interest in the down economy. But Apple has held firm to its stance that it won’t sell a laptop in the sub-$500 range (which most netbooks are), since it couldn’t make one that wouldn’t be a “piece of junk,” as Apple chief executive Steve Jobs so eloquently put it last year.

But on its most recent earnings call, Apple chief operating officer Tim Cook (who is currently running Apple while Steve Jobs is on medical leave) said that Apple was watching the market to see how it evolves. “We’ll see,” he said.

Apple sold more notebooks than it ever has last quarter, despite only having one type that’s under $1,000 — and it’s $999.

Solid numbers predicted for Apple ahead of earnings call

Posted by admin | Posted in News | Posted on 20-01-2009

Apple will disclose its earnings for Q1 FY2009 tomorrow and as is always the case, analysts are in full swing with revised predictions. If Apple’s announcement can live up to the bulk of these new estimates however, shareholders are in for some good news come Wednesday. According to a report issued today by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, Apple’s rebound performance in December looks to have saved the quarter - possibly propelling earnings beyond Wall Street projections. From the report:

.

.

.

.

  • 19-20 million iPods shipped during the December quarter, beating the Street’s 18.6 million expectation, based on analyzing retail data from research firm NPD Group.
  • 2.5-2.6 million Macs shipped, in line with the Street’s ~2.5 million expectation.

Munster anticipates Q1 revenues in the neighborhood of $10 billion, a substantial $300 million north of initial predictions. Earnings Per Share (EPS) however, are expected to come in at $1.32, $0.07 below the $1.39 prediction. Apple’s earnings call will be broadcast online tomorrow at 2:00pm PST / 5:00pm EST.

Apple working on a 15-inch MacBook Air?

Posted by admin | Posted in Computers | Posted on 19-01-2009

Sketchy rumor Sunday, people — Chinese site Apple.pro is saying there’s a 15-inch MacBook Air in the works. That would certainly be an interesting compromise between portability and screen real estate, especially since the Air’s new NVIDIA-based internals are actually somewhat capable, but we wouldn’t bank on big brother making an appearance just yet — although Apple.pro was right on the money with leaked unibody MacBook pictures, it’s also been way off in the past. Anyone else mildly intrigued by the idea of a thin’n'light with big screen? Comments await.

Fake image of new Mac mini might not be fake

Posted by admin | Posted in Computers | Posted on 22-12-2008

So Macenstein received an image from an anonymous tipster that supposedly depicts Apple’s upcoming Mac mini refresh. Presumably, the image is of an on-screen ad or a slide that would, in theory, be displayed during the Mac mini announcement many still expect to come next month. Macenstein posted it with skepticism, the blogosphere immediately dismissed it as fake and it probably is. That being said however, the reasoning most blogs are using to dismiss it isn’t exactly firm - at all. Firstly, the marketing blurb, “The world’s smallest desktop computer.” Many dismissed the phrase as missing Apple’s common word play but in reality, Apple uses simple bold statements quite often in its marcom. In fact, this slide lines up pretty well with early MacBook Air slides. The second item of contention is the groove around the perimeter of the mini, above the CD slot. While many jump to the conclusion that this is a fold up display, that’s not what we’re getting. To us, it looks like a venting system. Anyone who has used a new MacBook or MacBook Pro knows that these things can get hot - fast. As the new Mac mini will be made of aluminum, whether or not the image above is real, it stands to reason that Apple would need to cool a device that stuffs all of its guts into a package so small. Sure the image above could be fake, but if you think it’s because of the blurb or the groove you might want to think again. On the other hand, if you think it’s because some anonymous guy sent it to Macenstein, well, you’re probably right. If it is fake however, don’t expect it to be far off from the real deal.

Apple triBook needs to be the future of MacBooks

Posted by admin | Posted in Computers | Posted on 11-12-2008

Apple-Tribook-concept.jpg
As someone who uses multiple screens when I’m working (or playing games) the idea of having a laptop with some extra screen space as portable as the unit itself is really exciting. Sure, that extra space would come in the form of folding, side-mounted monitors that have a break before the main screen — annoying for some — but some extra, segmented workspace on a portable platform is music to my ears.

And portable the triBook is: the conceptual rendering, picked up by Mac|Life, calls for a notebook that’s 10 inches wide and a little over six inches long. Click on through for more information than you’d ever want to know about the triBook concept.
